Whisperer vs Fathom
Fathom is free, generous about it, and now offers bot-free capture as well. If what you need is meetings summarised, it is a hard product to argue with. Whisperer costs money and does something Fathom's site does not claim to do: answer you during the call.
Fathom capabilities below were read on fathom.ai, 7 September 2026
| Question | Fathom | Whisperer |
|---|---|---|
| Bot in the call | Either — bot-free capture is offered | Never |
| During the call | Not stated on its site | Answers from your knowledge base |
| Price | A free forever plan, plus paid team plans | 60 free minutes a month, then paid |
Being direct
If summaries are the job, the free tool probably wins
It would be easy to write around this and dishonest to do it. A person who wants their meetings recorded, summarised and searchable, and who does not need help while talking, is being well served by a free product and does not need to pay us.
The case for Whisperer starts where a summary stops: when the value of the information expires at the end of the call.
- You need a record of what was said
- Action items collected afterwards
- Search across past conversations
- Sharing with people who missed it
- An objection you cannot answer from memory
- A term in a language you half-speak
- A question about your own past commitments
- A design round where structure is the grade
Honest
Where Fathom is the better purchase
- Budget is the constraint
A free forever plan against a paid one is not a subtle difference, and pretending otherwise would insult the reader.
- Team coverage
Solutions across sales, CS, marketing, ops, HR and product point at an organisation rather than one person.
- You want the choice of bot or not
Both modes are offered. Whisperer has exactly one mode and no bot in it.
Limits
Whisperer's two
60 minutes of recognition a month, and the knowledge base — the part that makes live answers specific — is on the paid plans.
A finished recording can be uploaded: the Meetings section takes one file up to 25 MB — mp3, m4a, wav, ogg, flac, aac, plus mp4 and webm, from which the audio track is used. What is missing is bulk upload of a whole archive; and it spends the same minutes a live call does.
Questions
Choosing between the two
Why would I pay when Fathom is free?
Only for the live half. If nothing in your week depends on knowing something before a call ends, there is no argument here worth making.
Can I use Fathom for records and Whisperer for live help?
Yes. In bot-free mode neither joins the call, so they do not interfere.
Does Whisperer have a free plan at all?
60 minutes of recognition a month, indefinitely. It is enough to judge the mechanism, not enough to run a working week on.
Which is better for a team?
Fathom is shaped for teams. Whisperer is one person's tool with no shared layer.
