Four things at once, none of them fully
In a lecture a student is doing four things at the same time: listening to the lecturer, writing, trying to understand, and — by the third class of the day — trying not to fall asleep. These compete for the same attention, so each of them is done at half strength.
The mechanics are simple. While you finish writing the previous thought, the next one is being said. While you work out the formula, the explanation of why it is needed goes past. By exam season you are left with notes in which the first twenty minutes are detailed, the middle is bullet points, and the last fifteen minutes are three words and an arrow.
Your notes end up covering not what mattered but what you had time for. That is the real problem, and better handwriting does not solve it.
Why handwritten notes are incomplete — and why that is normal
Not because you are not trying. Because the speeds do not match: a lecturer speaks at roughly 120–150 words per minute, and handwriting runs at 20–30. Even a stenographer does not «write down the lecture» — they capture it in a compressed system of signs, and that is taught as a separate skill.
Hence the typical gaps, the same for everyone.

The last line is the cruellest. The parts you did not understand are exactly the ones worth marking so you can come back in the evening. But marking them takes spare attention, and you have none — precisely because you are writing.
Why a transcript alone is not enough
The obvious idea: record the lecture on a phone and get the text. That solves half the problem — but only half.
- Ninety minutes of speech is 12–15 thousand words. Thirty pages of solid text. Reading them takes longer than sitting through the lecture again.
- Spoken language does not look like text. «So, look, here we have, uh, this thing here» is perfectly clear in the room and pure noise on paper, where it occupies a quarter of the volume.
- There is no structure. A transcript does not show where one topic ended and the next began, where a definition was and where a digression about a conference was.
- Terms break by ear. Surnames, Latin names, abbreviations — recognition errs most quietly on these: the text stays coherent and the substitution does not catch the eye.
- A transcript does not answer the main question — «what will be asked and what did I fail to understand». And that is the question people study by.
So a transcript is raw material, not notes. The difference between them is the difference between a stenographic record of a meeting and its minutes.
What good AI lecture notes look like
Useful lecture notes are seven blocks. Not five, not ten — seven, because people study from different ones at different times: one before a seminar, another the night before an exam.

And one requirement common to all seven: a link to the minute of the recording. Notes you can use to jump back and re-listen to thirty seconds of explanation are study material. Notes without that link are somebody's retelling, and there is nothing to check them against.
How a recording becomes notes
Between «recorded it on my phone» and «reading finished notes» there are four steps, each solving its own problem. Knowing them is useful: when the result disappoints, exactly one of them broke.

Step 1 — the recording. The most underrated one: everything else rests on it. A phone in your pocket gives you the rustle of fabric instead of a lecture; a phone face down on the desk already gives a workable recording; a laptop on the desk gives the best one. The back rows of a large hall are the worst case for any technology, including your own ears.
Step 2 — transcription. Speech becomes text with a time on every line. Timecodes are not decoration: they are what lets you go back to the moment you did not follow.
Step 3 — understanding. Here the text gets annotated: this is a topic, this is a definition, this is an example, this is a question left unanswered. That is separate work, and it is exactly what tools skip when they hand you «a summary in one paragraph».
Step 4 — structure. The annotation is laid out into the sections of your template — those seven blocks. The template matters: without it you get a generic «brief summary», equally useless for the seminar and for the exam.
A scenario: ninety minutes of calculus
A class from 9:00 to 10:30. Laptop on the desk, recording started at the beginning.
- 9:04 — the lecturer states the definition of uniform continuity. You write the first half and fall behind.
- 9:12 — a counterexample showing how it differs from ordinary continuity. The example is on the board, the explanation is spoken; your notebook keeps a drawing with no words.
- 9:31 — a question from the back row and the answer to it, which is in fact the heart of the topic. Nobody wrote it down.
- 9:48 — «this will definitely be on the exam».
- 10:05 — the proof of the theorem. You copy it from the board and barely hear why it is built that way.
- 10:26 — what to read before the seminar.
By the evening you have two thirds of the material in your notebook and a ninety-minute recording. Twenty minutes of processing later you have notes in which the definition is complete, the counterexample is restored with its explanation, the answer from 9:31 is its own block, the exam remark landed in «questions», and every item carries a time in the recording.
Your own part of the work starts there, and it does not shrink: read, compare with your notebook, mark what is unclear and go sort it out. The difference is that you now spend the evening working through the material instead of reconstructing it.
AI notes do not replace your own, and promising that would be a lie. They do not see the board, do not understand the gesture «this thing goes over here», get confused by rare surnames and do not know what you personally failed to follow. Your notebook knows what the recording does not: where you lost the thread.
The right pairing is not «instead of» but «together with»: the AI notes fill the gaps in yours, and yours show where to look. Handwritten notes are also remembered better — this is exactly the case where mechanical work is useful.

From there it is the same: the notes template decides what the result looks like. There are three built-in ones — a short summary, a stand-up and a task-focused layout — and none of them is about studying, so it is worth creating your own once and using it all term. What else is useful for a student:
- Notes come out in your language even if the lecture was in another one. A course in English, notes in your own language — while quotes, names and terms stay as they were said, untranslated: a translated term in your notes is useless.
- Search across all your classes at once. «Where did they explain the mean value theorem» is a question to the archive of a course, not to one recording.
- Export to txt, md, srt, vtt and json — the notes travel to Obsidian, Notion or wherever you keep your material.
- A knowledge base. Put a term's worth of notes in it and you can ask questions instead of scrolling. The assistant answers from your material rather than from internet generalities.
Honestly about the limits: the free plan gives 60 minutes of recognition per month — roughly two thirds of one class, enough to try and not enough for a term. Uploading a finished recording, analysing a class and searching across classes are paid capabilities: understanding is the most expensive stage of processing, tens of thousands of tokens per fragment for a ninety-minute recording. And the least pleasant truth: the quality of the notes rests on the quality of the recording rather than on the model. From the back row through hall noise nobody gets good notes.
One more thing worth thinking about before rather than after: recording a class concerns more people than you. In most universities recording for personal use is fine, but rules differ, and publishing a recording or notes without the lecturer's permission is definitely not a good idea. Asking once is easier than explaining afterwards.

How do I quickly make lecture notes from a recording?
Uploading the audio and getting a transcript takes minutes. Annotation and notes by template take a few more. So a finished draft appears roughly in the time it takes you to walk home. Comparing it with your notebook and working through what is unclear is your part, and it takes as long as it always did.
Will AI replace my own notes?
No, and it should not. It does not see the board, does not understand gestures and does not know where you personally lost the thread. How good does the recording have to be?
A phone face down on the desk or a laptop in front of you is enough. What works badly is everything that sounds bad to you too: a phone in a pocket, the back rows of a large hall, a fan next to the microphone. Recording quality affects the result more than any model setting.
Does it work with lectures in English?
Yes, recognition is multilingual and the notes are written in your language — you can follow a course in English and read notes in your own. Terms and names stay in the original: a translated term in notes only gets in the way.
What about a ninety-minute recording — is it too large?

Can I record a lecture without the lecturer's permission?
